Stop Chasing Every Customer: How to Find (and Keep) Your Dream Client

When you first started your business, the goal was simple: get customers. Any customers. But as your business grows, that scattergun approach starts to feel… exhausting. You’re pouring time, energy, and resources into chasing every single person, but you’re not connecting with the ones who truly get your brand. You’re ready for a change, but you’re not sure how to make it happen.

I know, because I’ve been there. In the early days, my ideal client was anyone who would buy my soap. But I quickly learned that not all customers are created equal. The most rewarding part of my entrepreneurial journey began when I got clear on exactly who my business was for—and just as importantly, who it wasn't.

The Problem with Being for "Everyone"

When you try to be everything to everyone, you end up being memorable to no one. Your brand message gets diluted, your marketing efforts feel scattered, and you attract clients who don't truly value your work. This not only leads to a lot of wasted time but also a deep sense of frustration.

The Blueprint for Finding Your Dream Client

The secret to a thriving creative business isn't a wider net; it's a stronger magnet. Your goal is to attract the people who are not just buying a product, but buying into your story, your mission, and your craft.

  • Get Specific: You have to know who you’re looking for. Who is your dream client? What are their values? What do they do for work? What are their frustrations and aspirations? The more specific you can get, the more effectively you can connect with them.

  • Speak Their Language: Once you know who they are, you need to talk to them directly. Use the language they use. Address their pain points. The copy on your website, your social media, and your emails should feel like a one-on-one conversation with them.

  • Show Your Value: Your dream clients don’t buy on price; they buy on value. They want to know what makes your brand different and why it's worth a premium. This is where your brand story, your craftsmanship, and your unique process become your most powerful sales tool.

  • Listen & Engage: When you find your dream clients, listen to what they have to say. Engage with their comments, ask them questions, and make them feel like a part of your journey. They will become your most powerful brand advocates.

The most successful brands are the ones that have a community of people who love what they do and are willing to pay for it. Ready to stop chasing every customer and start attracting your dream clients?
